Advanced Signs For Extended Family Members

This system for identifying family members uses a logical arrangement of positions similar to that used for colors. Signs for the family members begins with the most easily formed and earliest terms
Ma and Pa and adjusts and refines them into a complete system for signing all of the family relationships. By starting at a known person sign position such as pa one can move sequentially to the other relationships. Using this method all of the extended family relationships can be signed without the ambiguity that exists in spoken English. As with the color system there is no need to learn the overall system at first but just the need to learn the few specific person signs. After you know the basic ones all of the others will fill into their respective positions. The few family members the child actually encounters will soon have their unique signs.

  1. FAMILY
    - family

Sign - The signing hand starts with the father sign and then goes up and around the whole head and pauses at the starting place with a father sign.

Hint - Symbolizes all of the father's family relationships. One can form all of the mothers relationships using the same type of sign, but starting at the mother sign. Compare to ME. Or you can sign all of your personal family by starting at the baba sign.

Comment - The terms used in these spoken English names are outside of typical usage of English but they show geneological relationship and the sequence of the signs. .

  2. MA's-MA
    - ma's-ma

Sign - The signing hand does the MA sign and without a pause at the chin moves the hand to behind the ear and pauses.

Hint - This means mother's female parent. There is a similar sign for PA's-MA the fathers female parent.

Tech - Each of these family relationship signs begins at the top of the forehead for a male and at the ear lobe for a female and then moves through its stroke and onto the family relationship position of the referred to person. Compare to MA's-SIS and PA's-SIS and MA's-BRO and PA's-BRO. Using this system all of the family members can be precisely identified.
